Our training course is the top choice for managers, trainees and employees. You’ll be able to get your California food handler card in a matter of hours. Our course is tailor made to give you all the essential information you’ll need to be in full compliance of the law.

Our Food Handler course is in full compliance with all ANAB standards. It is updated often so that the information you receive is current with all laws and regulations.

WHAT IS THE CALIFORNIA FOOD HANDLER TRAINING PROGRAM?

California law mandates that people who are involved with preparing, storing or serving food must understand all important aspects of food safety including:

  • Preventing foodborne illness, including understanding how illnesses are spread through contaminated food and how food becomes contaminated through unsafe practices
  • Hygiene and why it’s important in preventing illnesses
  • How to maintain proper food temperatures
  • Using food equipment properly like refrigerators, thermometers and heaters to not only accept but also store food (including when food needs to be rejected)
  • Different types of foodborne hazards and the risks they pose
  • The proper way of cleaning and sanitizing to maintain a safe environment
  • How to recognize symptoms of communicable diseases and foodborne illnesses that will keep you from working, and knowing what kind of illnesses must be reported to your manager

Restaurant workers need to understand all these principles to keep customers safe. By earning your food handler card, you’ll be able to show that you’ve learned how to prepare and serve food safely.

REGISTERING YOUR CERTIFICATE WITH A LOCAL HEALTH DEPARTMENT

Please review the guidelines when signing up for the course as you will find detailed instructions on how and where to register. We work with many jurisdictions that allow us to collect and register for you. Many areas have no registration requirements.

California has no requirements for registering a food handler card with a health department apart from San Bernardino, Riverside and San Diego Counties. Registration occurs automatically with those counties if you take the course through an approved vendor.

FAQs

At Responsible Training, we make food handler certification in California pretty simple. However, you might still have some questions about the process, so we have taken the time to answer common inquiries below.

WHY DOES CALIFORNIA REQUIRE FOOD SAFETY TRAINING?

If food handlers do not follow proper procedures, it can place customers at risk for contracting foodborne illness. Some individuals have health conditions which could place them at risk of death if they were to come in contact with contaminated food. It’s easy to keep all your customers safe when you simply follow the procedures laid out in food safety training.

HOW DO I EARN MY CALIFORNIA FOOD HANDLERS CARD?

It’s simple! Our classes are all remote and can be done any time of the day or night on a laptop or desktop computer. You’ll simply review our fun and interactive California food handler card lessons, then take a short quiz. Start by creating an account and choosing the classes you need.

After you complete all the lessons, you can take your final exam. You have up to six months to complete the lessons, quizzes and final. Most people are able to finish in just a few hours, however.

WHEN WILL I RECEIVE MY FOOD HANDLERS CARD?

As soon as you complete the lessons, take the quiz and pass the final, you have earned your California food handlers card online! You don’t need an actual card, as in most areas, you will be automatically registered as holding a food handler certificate. When you complete the courses, we will provide detailed instructions on how to register. In some jurisdictions, as long as you have taken the courses and passed the final exam, you don’t need any additional registration.

You will need to print out your card / certificate upon completing your final exam. We recommend keeping a copy for your records. Note that managers of food establishments are required to keep copies of their employees’ food handler cards on file so they can be presented to a health official during an inspection.

For the state of California, your card is usually valid for 3 years, though there are instances where it may be good for one year more or less. Your food handler certificate can be checked for validity anytime online.

CAN I TAKE THE COURSE FOR MY CERTIFICATE FOR CALIFORNIA FOOD HANDLERS ONLINE?

Absolutely! – Responsible Training's online Food Handlers program is ANAB accredited for California and many other states. Using the online food handlers certification option saves money and time.

HOW DO I GET A REFUND FOR MY COURSE?

Responsible Training’s first consideration is customer satisfaction. If for any reason you request a refund before a certificate is issued, we will be happy to refund you the full amount of the transaction.
