California Food Handlers Card

Are you considering a career in the restaurant industry in California? If you live in California and work in the food service industry, the California Department of Public Health requires you to have a California Food Handlers card. Having this card ensures you are fully compliant with California law. Additionally, all retail food facilities must have at least one Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM).

Responsible Training's California Food Handlers safety course was designed specifically for those who work in California and prepare, store or serve food in a retail food facility. The course covers all critical food handler safety topics, such as foodborne illnesses, food preparation, food storage, and food handling procedures.

FAQs

At Responsible Training, we make getting your CA food handler certification as simple as possible. However, you might still have some questions about the process, so we have taken the time to answer common inquiries below.

WHY DO I NEED A CALIFORNIA FOOD HANDLER CARD?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there are 48 million cases of foodborne illness annually in the United States alone. Of those 48 million cases, 128,000 people are hospitalized, and 3,000 die.[1] Aside from being a requirement to work in the food industry, a California Food Handlers card can also help you prevent foodborne illnesses by teaching you how to handle food safely.

DO I NEED AN ACTUAL CALIFORNIA FOOD HANDLER CARD TO BEGIN WORKING IN A RESTAURANT?

In most areas of California, once you have completed the lessons and passed the final exam, you will automatically be registered as having obtained a Food Handler certificate. Therefore, in most cases, you will not need a physical Food Handler card to show to your manager. However, we do recommend printing your card for your records. In some cases, your manager may want to keep your card on file, so it is good to have a physical card handy.

WHAT WILL I LEARN IN THE CALIFORNIA FOOD HANDLER TRAINING PROGRAM?

The California Food Handler training includes everything you need to know to comply with California food handling laws fully. Examples of the topics covered include how to prevent foodborne illness, the importance of hygiene in preventing foodborne illnesses, maintaining proper food temperatures, properly operating food equipment, properly sanitizing food handling areas, and appropriate procedures related to each of these topics.
