How this Course Works

After you have created an account and purchased the course, you are ready to begin. 

  • We recommend the Chrome browser for best results. No special apps or plugins are required.
  • The course usually takes about eight hours to work through. It covers everything you need to know to pass the exam and obtain your certificate.
  • You may take the course on any internet-connected device: smartphone, tablet, or computer. However, you should use a computer with a camera and microphone to take the final exam.
  • If using a smartphone to take the course, you will get the best result by holding the phone horizontally. Be sure the rotation lock is off.
  • There are no page timers, so you can work through the course at your own pace.
  • When you are ready, you may take the exam at any time. No scheduling is necessary.
  • After 24 hours, log back into your account and download your certificate.

How to take the Exam

Once you have completed the course, you are ready to take the exam. You can take this exam any time, no prescheduling is required!

This exam will have a Remote Proctor, meaning that you will need a computer or tablet with a camera and audio which allows a remote live proctor to observe you while you take the exam.

In order to take your certification exam, you must have a system that meets the requirements mentioned above and a valid ID. Watch the video to see all the rules that our proctoring partner, Integrity Advocate, enforces to ensure the exam is taken securely. 

Once you’ve set up your exam area and the Integrity Advocate proctor has approved, you may begin the exam.

There are two possible test forms you can take. Both test forms are equivalent with the same minimum passing score of 75% +\- 0.1%.

who Needs a Food Protection Manager Certificate?

In California, a food manager certification is required for establishments that prepare, handle, or serve non-prepackaged food. There must be at least one Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM) during the hours of operation at each food facility. This includes restaurants, grocery stores, food trucks, and more.

Is the Certificate State Approved?

Yes! California and most other states accept certification awarded for passing the ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB) and the Conference for Food Protection (CFP) accredited exam.

When Do I Get my Certificate?

Your certificate will be available within 1 business day after you have successfully completed the online remotely proctored exam.

Can I use the Same Card for Multiple Jobs?

Yes. Your certificate is valid across any food service establishment in California and most other states, as well.

For How Long is the Food Manager Certificate Valid?

Your certificate is valid for 5 years from the date you passed the exam.

Is my Out-Of-State Food Manager Certificate Valid in California?

Probably. Most states accept the ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB) and the Conference for Food Protection (CFP) accredited exam for certification.
