Who needs to be a Certified Food Protection Manager?

Texas requires a Certified Food Manager (CFM) certificate for individuals in charge of food establishments that prepare, handle, or serve non-prepackaged food.

Is the certificate state-approved?

Yes. The Texas Department of State Health Services has approved the Responsible Training Certified Food Manager program and exam.

How long does it take to complete?

The course takes about 6 to 8 hours to complete and is entirely online. The exam has a 90 minute time limit.

What will I be tested on in the exam?

This certification program will assess your knowledge and understanding in:

  • Highly Susceptible Populations and FDA Food Code Terminology
  • Foodborne Illness
  • Health Inspections and Facility Maintenance
  • Food Management Responsibilities
  • Food Controls
  • Proper Cleaning and Sanitizing Measures for Food Equipment
  • Employee Hygiene
  • Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP)
  • Proper Use of Chemicals and Pest Control

There are two possible test forms you can take. Both test forms are equivalent with the same minimum passing score of 70% +\- 0.1%.

Do I need to schedule the final exam?

No. Our on-demand exam is available 24/7. There is no remote proctor, just some security questions.

How does this exam work?

You can complete this course at your own pace. There are no page timers and you may skip forward or back to study the material in whatever order you desire. After each chapter there is a quiz to help ensure you have learned the necessary information.

At the beginning of the course you are asked to answer 10 security questions. During the course, you will occasionally be asked to provide the answers you saved to these questions. If you answer incorrectly, you will be locked out of the course and need to call support and request the course be unlocked.

When you feel you are ready, you may take the exam. 

Can I take the course and exam on a mobile device?

The Texas Certified Food Manager exam has no proctor, so you can take it on your computer, tablet, or smart phone.

When do I get my certificate?

You’ll receive your Responsible Training Certified Food Manager Certificate immediately after passing the final exam.
