A FOOD HANDLER/ RESPONSIBLE BEVERAGE SERVICE CERTIFICATE- A VALUABLE SIGN OF ACCOMPLISHMENT
Anyone who works in a place that serves food to the public, such as a restaurant, bar, food truck, or hospital, should hold a Food Handler Certificate to show they understand food safety. If you come into contact with food during preparation, cooking, serving, or cleaning, this training will be valuable for your job. Additionally, anyone who handles and serves alcohol for on-premise consumption on their job is required to complete a Responsible Beverage Service Training course and pass the RBS Certification Exam provided by the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control. Not only will it help you understand the law, but it can help your employer avoid fines and legal troubles.
HOW IS A FOOD HANDLER/RESPONSIBLE BEVERAGE SERVICE CERTIFICATE USED?
Holding a Food Handler Certificate shows employers that you have passed the minimum requirement of understanding food safety. Employers can check your certificate status through our online system.
Everyone in the state of California who serves alcohol where it is consumed will be required to hold an RBS Certification. In addition, anyone who works in a managerial role for an establishment that serves alcohol will need to have this certification. This requirement extends to people who may serve alcoholic beverages in a transportation setting, such as on a plane or a train.
You may not say or imply that you are "certified," "certificated," "licensed," "registered" or "accredited"; these terms indicate a different type of program than food handler and seller-server training.
FOR HOW LONG IS THE CERTIFICATE VALID?
The Food Handler Certificate is valid for 3 years in all states that have adopted the ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB) standard. The Responsible Beverage Service Certification is valid for 3 years from the date of completion.
You can obtain your RBS certification to be a legal California alcohol server simply by going through the course we offer and taking the exam through the RBS Portal. The exam costs $3.00 and will become available only once you complete the course.
