The BASSET, or Beverage Alcohol Sellers and Servers Education and Training program, will train you to sell and serve alcohol in a legal and safe manner. The program is designed to comply with the Illinois Liquor Control Act and also has been approved by the Illinois Liquor Control Commission. This training program is designed to train servers and sellers of alcohol in a retail or on-premise setting. By taking this training, a person shows they are dedicated to learning how to do the best job in serving alcohol.

A BASSET Card Shows Dedication and Training
People in Illinois who serve alcohol in a bar, restaurant, hotel, or another on-premise setting are required to know the laws that govern its sale. Having training that covers the laws and different situations involved in serving alcohol will make you more confident and a more valuable employee. The training will help you respond effectively to many situations that occur in the alcohol serving setting.
The BASSET Card Proves You Have Valuable Training
Presenting a BASSET card shows you have had training in alcohol safety and regulations and laws. It shows you have the knowledge required to serve alcoholic beverages responsibly. Upon successfully completing the BASSET training, you will be given a temporary copy good for 30 days, during which time you will receive the official BASSET card in the mail.
Potential employers or ILCC officials can check the card status on an online system here.
You can call yourself a Responsible Training BASSET Program Recipient on your resume or job interviews. However, you can not refer to yourself as certified, licensed, accredited, or registered.
How is this Course Designed?
The BASSET Training Course is designed to be taken in five lessons at the student's own pace. You must take the lessons in order and cannot advance to the next lesson until the previous one is completed.
- Each of the five lessons contains detailed information on one topic and fun exercises. There is an optional voice-over that can read the lesson out loud.
- After each lesson is completed, there is a short three to five question quiz to test a person's understanding of the material.
- When all four lessons and quizzes are completed, you take a final exam containing 30 multiple-choice questions. You must pass with at least 70% to get your BASSET Card.
You must complete all four lessons and the final exam within six months of registering. The course can be finished in as little as four hours. That is one hour per lesson.
What Information Does the Course Teach?
The BASSET Training Program teaching objectives are:
- To train and educate people who want to be sellers or servers to perform responsible alcohol service
- To teach students how to tell signs of intoxication and to use effective intervention techniques
- Training students how to prevent DUIs and alcohol-related accidents and fatalities
- To have students learn how to prevent underage sales and drinking
- Teach students how to create safer establishments where alcohol is served and safer surrounding neighborhoods
- Educate owners, managers, and staff members about dram shop insurance, state laws, and local ordinances concerning alcohol service

HOW LONG IS THE BASSET CARD VALID?
The temporary card you receive on completing the course is good for 30 days. The official BASSET card mailed to you is good for three years. It is required that you get refresher training every three years. This information is printed on your certificate and can be verified by going to the online verification program listed above.
HOW DO I EARN MY CERTIFICATE?
The BASSET training program includes four informative lessons. Each has a quiz at the end to test your understanding of the lesson and prepare you for the final test. You are required to complete all four lessons in order and then take a final exam consisting of 30 multiple-choice questions. You must get a passing score of at least 70% to be awarded a certificate or BASSET Card.
If you do not pass the final exam, you can retake the program and the exam or just retake the exam until you pass it.
DO I NEED PROOF OF OTHER EDUCATION TO TAKE THIS PROGRAM?
No – Anyone can sign up for this training program as long as they have the needed skills. You will need to be able to read and write and possess basic computer and internet skills. These skills include being able to locate and log into websites and then read and follow the information and instructions found there. The language used in this training is simple and easy to understand, allowing students to complete the course quickly and successfully.
WHAT TYPE OF COMPUTER DO I USE?
It is recommended that you use a standard desktop or laptop computer to take this course. Some smartphones or tablets may work depending on the brand or model.
HOW DO I REGISTER FOR THE BASSET TRAINING COURSE?
Registration is a quick and convenient process. You will fill in an online form with your basic information. Then, you will be asked to create a username and password for yourself and security reasons. You choose the course you want to take. When you want to start your training, log in using your username and password. You will be guided to go through our introduction page before starting the actual course. The personalized password selection and the secure server guarantee that your test data and personal information stay safe and secure.

HOW DO I GET A REFUND FOR MY COURSE?
We understand things happen and plans change. A person may decide partway through the training program that it is not what they expected or what they need. Our first consideration is for customer satisfaction. Responsible Training will gladly honor requests for any reason for refunds before a certificate is issued.
