What a food handler card actually is
A food handler card (sometimes called a food handler certificate, food worker card, or food handler permit) is a credential you earn by completing a short training course and passing a simple exam. The training covers the everyday fundamentals of keeping food safe: proper handwashing, avoiding cross-contamination, holding food at the right temperatures, personal hygiene, and recognizing the signs of foodborne illness.
It's designed for frontline food service employees — cooks, servers, bartenders, baristas, dishwashers, cafeteria workers, food truck staff, and grocery deli workers. If your job involves touching food, food-contact surfaces, or the equipment used to prepare food, a food handler card almost certainly applies to you.
